Children & Youth Education

Jesus said,

Let the little children come to me, and do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of heaven belongs.

~ Matthew 19:14 (NSRV)

Christian Education
is a vital part of the life of Lehman Church. We believe the study of the scriptures of the Old and New Testaments and the teachings of Jesus Christ are essential for Christian growth.

Our Goal
We offer a variety of quality learning experiences for people of all ages that will welcome and “engage”; “enrich" understanding and knowledge of the scripture; and produce experiences that will "change" lives through the love of Jesus Christ.

the Regular School Year

There is no charge for Sunday school; however, parents must complete the registration form HERE when registering their child/children for the first time.

Nursery/Toddler Class
The purpose of our Nursery is to provide loving child care in a safe environment. Nursery Care is available during both the 9:30 a.m. and 11:00 am worship services. Our nursery staff consists of one paid Nursery Coordinator, one paid Nursery Assistant, and volunteers. All of our nursery workers are Safe Sanctuary trained and have appropriate background checks. To ensure the proper care and safety of the children, we have two attendants in the nursery at all times, and we then follow the ratio of one adult for every four children.

       9:30 a.m. hour
  • NURSERY CARE is provided for children age six weeks through two years.
  • TODDLER CLASS provides Nursery Care and a Sunday School program for children who have reached two years of age by September of the current school year. Music, stories, play time and crafts introduce Bible stories and reinforce God's love to our toddlers.

       11:00 a.m. hour

  • NURSERY CARE is open to children age six weeks through age five.

Pre-School & Kindergarten Classes - Sundays, 9:30 a.m.
Our goal for the education of our “little ones” is to provide a fun, welcoming, and secure environment where the children can experience the love of God while learning basic Bible truths.
  • PRESCHOOL – This class is for three-year-olds, four-year-olds, and five-year-olds who have not yet entered kindergarten. With more than 40 years of combined experience teaching young children, our preschool teachers provide a welcoming and nurturing environment for the children. Each week’s lesson is built around a central Bible theme that is incorporated into the story, craft, snack, singing and prayer segments.
  • KINDERGARTEN – This class is for children who are currently in Kindergarten. It provides “hands-on” learning of Bible stories and truths using skits, games, and other fun activities.

Elementary Classes - Workshop Rotation - Sundays, 9:30 a.m.

Students in Grades 1-4 use “rotation” style classes that focus on learning the Bible through “experiences." Each week the children travel to a different room where they explore Bible stories using drama, crafts, computers, movies, and games, and focus on Biblical themes that will help them apply these lessons into their daily lives.

'Tween - 5th & 6th Grade Opportunities - Sundays, 9:30 a.m.

These lessons are geared for 'tweens in their transitional years, and use a variety of engaging activities to not only teach Bible truths, but to make them compelling and relevant to the lives of these young people as they are growing, changing, and becoming.

Teens - 8th - 12th Grade - Sundays, 9:30 a.m.

TEENS HAVE TWO OPTIONS:

  • TO BE SUNDAY SCHOOL YOUTH VOLUNTEERS, OR
  • TO WORSHIP IN CROSS CONNECTION

Note: Due to our Safe Sanctuary Policy, youth volunteers can be helpers as long as they are five years older than the classes they are helping. This means 8th graders can help with children up to 3rd grade, 9th graders can help with children up to 4th grade, etc.

We are thankful for all teens who volunteer! Please use the registration form to sign up to volunteer, and we will contact you with assignments.

Isabelle Lyttle Scholarship

The Isabelle Lyttle Scholarship fund was established in 1993 to honor and recognize the career of Isabelle Lyttle who was a public school teacher, Sunday school teacher, and a well loved member of Lehman church. It is presented each year by the Commission on Children and Youth Education (CCYE) to graduating seniors who are active in the life of the church and who will be continuing their education in some way after high school. The purpose of this scholarship is to help with the cost of textbooks and other required materials as the students enter college or other higher-education institutions.

TO RECEIVE this scholarship, high school seniors must fill out an application form in the spring of their senior year which will then be reviewed by the CCYE. Applications are available in the church office or by contacting the Director of Christian Education.

TO DONATE to the Isabelle Lyttle Scholarship Fund, please use the envelopes provided in the pews. Thank you for your generosity!

Safe Sanctuaries

Lehman Memorial Church is committed to providing a safe environment in which our children and youth can grow and experience a personal faith through Jesus Christ. The safety of our children, youth and those who work with them is a priority. In order to ensure this, we have adopted “safe sanctuary policies." These policies follow the requirements set forth by the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference of the United Methodist Church (www.epaumc.org).

All staff members and any persons who volunteer to work with children or youth in any capacity must complete the following:

  • Volunteer application and reference checks
  • Child Abuse History Clearance (every three years)
  • PA State Criminal Record Check (every three years)
  • FBI Fingerprinting may be required (see below for more information)
  • A yearly “Safe Sanctuary” training which reviews the policies set forth along with any changes or additions to the policies
  • A signed “covenant” agreeing to the safe sanctuary policies of the church.
